Marlin Club Junior's Tournament Saturday, August 16, 2003

I have again been given the honor of organizing The Marlin Club Junior's Tournament to be held Saturday August 16, 2003.  This tournament is free. The tournament is open to all who were under the age of 16 years on January 1, 2003 with one qualifier.  That qualifier is that they must be sponsored by a Marlin Club member by fishing on the boat of a Marlin Club member.

If you are not a member of the Marlin Club and have kids that would like to participate in this fun family event, this would be a great reason to join the club so the kids can fish in the tournament and so you can enjoy all the benefits of membership.  The cost to join is just $125.00

Everybody leaves a winner as there will be a raffle where all junior angler participants who attend the barbecue/awards ceremony will win a raffle prize that will be highlighted by a Shimano and Seeker rod and reel combo.      All junior angler participants also get a goodie bag.

There are trophies for the high boy and high girl angler as well as prizes for the big fish in each of 5 categories.  The categories are Billfish, Tuna, Yellowtail, Dorado and the Killer B's {bass, barracuda, bonito and "butts" (halibut)}.

Fishing begins at dawn, Saturday August, 16, 2003 and the weigh in deadline is at 4:30 pm. at The Marlin Club the same day.   The awards ceremony, raffle and barbecue to be shortly thereafter from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. at The Marlin Club.

Entry forms are available at the Marlin Club and the Marlin Club website at www.themarlinclub.com

The deadline to enter is to have entry forms at the Marlin Club by Friday, August 15, 2003.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (Bob Vanian) at (619) 226-8218.

Bring the family out, participate and have fun!!

Thursday Evening August 14, 2003

Here is a quick update.  I have been running around most of the day getting ready for the Marlin Club Junior's Tournament on Saturday.  It is getting late so here is an abbreviated report with all the important coordinates.

One good thing to report is that the weather improved considerably today and it ended up being a pretty decent day of weather on the albacore grounds below San Diego.  There was some breeze and chop. As always, be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

The albacore fishing was good today but it was a morning bite with the bite turning scratchy later in the day.  There continue to be better numbers of yellowtail and dorado on the kelp paddies as well.

There was some albacore action around and about the 390 Bank today with some limit catches reported.  Some of the stops were pretty good.  Here are some coordinates where there was action today and also see Lou Brito's email report further below:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3200 and 11751                             51 miles 206 degrees

3204 and 11751                             47 miles 210 degrees

Another good area was at the 213 Bank.  There were some good albacore stops in that area this morning as well.  Here are some coordinates where some good stops were reported:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3149 and 11748                             58 miles 197 degrees

3151 and 11752                             58 miles 202 degrees

There were a lot of kelp paddie yellowtail mixed with some albacore to the inside of the 1010 Trench.  Here are some coordinates from today's fishing in that zone:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3142 and 11738                            61 miles 188 degrees

3140 and 11737                            62 miles 186 degrees

There was a good area of albacore this morning further down below the 1010 Trench.  Take a look at the following coordinates:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3120 and 11750                             84 miles 189 degrees

3122 and 11748                             82 miles 188 degrees

3122 and 11752                             84 miles 191 degrees

3123 and 11753                             83 miles 191 degree

3218 and 11746                             86 miles 186 degrees

Private boater JD of the Martuni reported fishing the 371 Bank and 302 Bank for several of the big yellowtail today.  Most of the action came from around the 302 Bank on kelp paddies.  On the inside of the 302 Bank at around 15 miles from Point Loma there was a line of kelp paddies that were loaded with dorado.  They were not biters but there were a lot of fish in the area.

Here is an email report from private boater Lou Brito of the Seaya who caught limits of albacore around the 390 Bank today:

     Hello Bob

Left 3 am headed for latitude and longitude coordinates 32 10 & 117 40 (36 miles 205 degrees from Point Loma) and just inside the 390 got there @ daybreak trolled for nothing for a while just about to pick um up and head for the 1010 when we got a jig strike and a bait fish worked the area about 1 mile circle for limits of nice size 20-25 lbs albys.

At latitude and longitude coordinates 32 00 & 117 41 (45 miles 198 degrees from Point Loma) also found a small patty holding many yellows lost a few caught 6 @  20 plus lbs fish and threw back half a dozen small ones also got a alby on the patty.

All this and back at the dock by 1 pm. Weather was a little bumpy but ok with the sun shinning

Wednesday Evening August 13, 2003

Here are some additional coordinates to supplement the albacore report from earlier this afternoon.  There is good albacore action continuing in the area of latitude and longitude coordinates 3110 and 11724 at 90 miles 173 degrees from Point Loma.

Some good albacore action was reported at 3107 and 11735 which is 94 miles 179 degrees from Point Loma.

There was a report of a boat getting a couple of 20 fish stops in some of the purple blue color water at 3120 and 11750 which is 84 miles 189 degrees from Point Loma.  There has not been this type of purple blue water around very much if at all this season.

To add to the coordinates in the afternoon report below regarding the 1010 Trench, there was some good fishing reported in the area of 3143 and 11743 which is 61 miles 192 degrees from Point Loma.

Way down the line, there was a report of a good area of albacore biting at 3058 and 11721 which is 102 miles 171 degrees from Point Loma.

I got a second hand report  that there were some albacore caught this afternoon 10 miles south of Pyramid Head at San Clemente Island.  That is the only information I have of albacore  being caught up this way today.

Captain Chris Abate of the 6 pack charter yacht Prime Time of Prime Time Sportfishing had an interesting day today with 20 yellowtail and 3 albacore.  This morning,  Chris was working the area of 3126 and 11726 which is 74 miles 175 degrees from Point Loma.  He scratched out just a couple of albacore in that area and a few yellowtail off of a couple of kelp paddies.  On the way up he had a great paddie for 14 yellowtail at 3139 and 11731 which is 62 miles 180 degrees from Point Loma.  He said about half of the yellowtail they caught were the big jumbos and went from 20 to 30 pounds.

Chris said he is going to start the day working the area of the 1010 Trench tomorrow around the region of 3143 and 11743 as described above, as that was some of the best albacore fishing he heard about today.

Wednesday Afternoon, August 13, 2003 @ 2:00 pm.

There is some good albacore fishing going on again today.  Boats fishing several different areas are picking up some good numbers of fish.  It is not the super wide open catch all you want out of one stop kind of fishing but good action with plenty of fish nonetheless.

The one negative to report is the weather which is once again quite breezy, rough and sloppy.  As always be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

On Monday there was good albacore fishing 6 miles 130 degrees from Pyramid Head at San Clemente Island and it slowed in that area on Tuesday just to have a good bite pop up outside the 43 Fathom Spot on Tuesday in the region of latitude and longitude coordinates 3236 and 11808 which is 46 miles 253 degrees from Point Loma.  Today though, the reports from both those areas and from the Butterfly Bank are of slow fishing.  Weather they are down or have moved out as quickly as they moved in, it is a quiet day in this more northern sector so far today.

Boats fishing outside and also below the 390 Bank were picking up some scattered albacore this morning.  I heard one boat with 3 albacore this morning, another with 3 albacore and a yellowtail and both boats were thinking of heading in because of the bad weather.  Look outside the 421 Spot in the region of latitude and longitude coordinates 3206 and 11752 which is 46 miles 212 degrees from Point Loma and also look below the 390 Bank in the region of 3200 and 11747 which is 43 miles 203 degrees from Point Loma.

A bit further down there is some very good fishing reported around the 213 Bank and 1010 Trench with some limit catches reported.  At the 213 Bank, take a look at 3151 and 11744 which is 54 miles 196 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3150 and 11742 at 54 miles 194 degrees from Point Loma.  Just above the top of the 1010 Trench there was steady action reported at 3146 and 11746 which is 60 miles 195 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look nearby at 3146 and 11743 which is 59 miles 193 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3148 and 11743 which is 57 miles 194 degrees from Point Loma.

There is another good area of albacore is biting down below the 295 Bank and below the Double 220 Bank .  There have also been some good numbers of yellowtail on the kelp paddies in this sector.  Some fish have shown up in some cleaner water a touch further west today than they have been in recent days.  Take a look at 3116 and 11741 which is 86 miles 182 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3116 and 11743 which is 86 miles 184 degrees from Point Loma.  Also good action was reported at 3115 and 11742 which is 87 miles 184 degrees from Point Loma.

Not to be overlooked is another zone a bit further into the east as boats were getting some good stops to over 50 albacore per stop in the area of 3110 and 11724 which is 90 miles 173 degrees from Point Loma.

On Tuesday there were some scattered albacore stops in closer to the coast below Ensenada, but I have yet to hear a report from that sector today.  Boats out of Hotel Coral were catching some scattered albacore while working up and down the region of the 11700 longitude line.   There were some scattered catches reported while working in and out between the 11700 to 11703 longitude lines and while working up and down between the 3130 and 3122 longitude lines.  That would have you generally working between 70 and 78 miles about 159 degrees from Point Loma.  Specifically, look at 3129 and 11701 which is 71 miles 159 degrees from Point Loma.

Tuesday August 12, 2003

Today's albacore fishing was good.  It was not the wide open catch all you want and go home type of fishing but good steady fishing in several areas.  The negative to report was the weather which was quite a bit worse that the sloppy weather on Monday to where it was quite rough today.  As always, be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

There was good fishing in a few different areas.  One of the better bites of the day was outside the 43 Fathom Spot and up toward Pyramid Head.  The counts from this area were in the high teens and 20's but that is deceptive because they were from boats that were fishing with lousy bait.  They were having fish come to the boat good on most every stop but between the weather and bait were having a hard time doing much with baitfish.  Here are some coordinates where there was action reported in this zone:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3238 and 11806                            45 miles 256 degrees

3236 and 11808                            46 miles 253 degrees

3240 and 11814                           52 miles 258 degrees

3242 and 11805                           44 miles 261 degrees

There was also some action reported by the Butterfly Bank.  Take a look at latitude and longitude coordinates  3226 and 11809 which is 49 miles 242 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3231 and 11807 which is 46 miles 247 degrees from Point Loma.

There was a boat that had about 30 albacore fishing about 9 miles northwest of the Cross inside the 60 Mile Bank, but the bite sounded better up outside the 43 Fathom Spot.  9 Miles northwest of the Cross would have you in the region of 3207 and 11805 which is 55 miles 221 degrees from Point Loma.

Private boater Jim Daniells of the Wildcat fished on Mark Elliot's boat today and they had about 10 albacore while fishing around the 213 Bank.  They had a 5 fish stop early and it was so rough they worked back inside below the 390 Bank and scratched some fish on the way into that zone.  Out by the 213 Bank they had action at 3150 and 11750 which is 58 miles 199 degrees from Point Loma.  They scratched a few fish from that area on in to 3155 and 11743 which is 50 miles 213 degrees from Point Loma.

There were some scattered stops at the Airplane Bank at 3150 and 11807 which is 67 miles 210 degrees from Point Loma.

I did not hear anyone fishing the 1010 Trench today as most of the San Diego Sportboat fleet chose to fish further down the line.  On Monday there was some good fishing for boats fishing 64 to 69 miles 194 to 200 degrees from Point Loma.

There was a good mixed bag catch of yellowtail and albacore for boats fishing below the 295 Bank today.  Nothing super fantastic to report but some good overall action.  Here are some coordinates where action was reported within this zone:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3117 and 11726                             82 miles 175 degrees

3124 and 11724                             75 miles 174 degrees

3114 and 11727                             86 miles 175 degrees

3119 and 11725                             80 miles 175 degrees

3114 and 11724                             86 miles 173 degrees

Boats fishing outside  the 1140 Finger did well today.  One of the best areas of the day was at 3108 and 11719 which is 91 miles 171 degrees from Point Loma.

There was some scattered action not too far below the Inner Bank.  Take a  look at 3127 and 11712 which is 72 miles 166 degrees from Point Loma and 3126 and 11713 which is 72 miles 167 degrees from Point Loma.

For the first time in a while the boats out of Hotel Coral were catching some scattered albacore while working up and down the region of the 11700 longitude line.

Monday Evening August 11, 2003

There was good fishing today with albacore showing up in good numbers in several areas.  Some good news for those fishing out of Los Angeles and Orange County area harbors is that good numbers of fish showed up in areas within a reasonable distance from  these harbors.

The weather ended up being breezy and bumpy today but I did not hear any serious complaints.  It is sloppy out there, as always be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

I will start below and work up the line.

Boats fishing outside of the 1140 Finger did well again today.  It seemed as if the bite down this way picked up at midmorning after kind of a scratchy start to the day.  It ended up being limit fishing for most all the boats I heard fishing down this way today.  Here are some coordinates where there was good fishing reported down this way today:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3122 and 11719                           77 miles 171 degrees

3114 and 11726                           85 miles 174 degrees

3115 and 11726                           84 miles 174 degrees

3113 and 11726                           86 miles 174 degrees

3115 and 11724                           84 miles 173 degrees

3116 and 11726                           83 miles 175 degrees

3113 and 11713                           86 miles 167 degrees

3109 and 11718                           90 miles 170 degrees

There was also good fishing below the 295 Bank in the area of 3121 and 11737 which is 80 miles 182 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3118 and 11732 which is 82 miles 178 degrees from Point Loma.  The past few days have seen some good numbers of the 10 to 20 pound class yellowtail mixed with the albacore in this zone.

There was another good area around and about the 1010 Trench and between the 213 Bank 1067 Trench.  There are some coordinates listed in the morning report below where there was some good fishing at the 1010 Trench, but as the day went on boats continued to work west and find action between the 213 Bank and 1067 Trench.  Here are some coordinates where there was good fishing reported within this sector:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3142 and 11749                             65 miles 194 degrees

3141 and 11749                             66 miles 195 degrees

3147 and 11747                             59 miles 195 degrees

3140 and 11750                             66 miles 195 degrees

3138 and 11750                             69 miles 194 degrees

3144 and 11750                             64 miles 197 degrees

3141 and 11751                             66 miles 196 degrees

3142 and 11753                             66 miles 198 degrees

3151 and 11748                             56 miles 199 degrees (a few fish in this area)

3146 and 11754                             63 miles 200 degrees

3148 and 11754                             62 miles 201 degrees

Boats fishing their way down from some of the Orange County and Los Angeles area harbors picked up some pretty good numbers of fish inside of the Butterfly Bank.  There are the closest albacore that I know of to Point Loma.  Below the lower Butterfly, take a look in the area of 3205 and 11754 at 48 miles 212 degrees from Point Loma.  Inside of the lower Butterfly,  look at 3213 and 11756 at 44 miles 221 degrees from Point Loma.  Up just a bit further, look at 3216 and 11756 at 43 miles 224 degrees from Point Loma.

I got a report from private boater George Garrett of the Joker who reported getting a cell phone call from his friend aboard the private boat Acacia.  George reported that his friend was in a wide open bite this afternoon just outside Pyramid head at San Clemente Island. This sounded real good as George said that they had 40 albacore and were still in fish. They were at 3244 and 11816 which is 53 miles 263 degrees from Point Loma and is 6 miles 130 degrees from Pyramid head at San Clemente Island.  When the fish get up in this area another good spot to take a look at is in the region of 3236 and 11819.  I did not get a report from that area today, but that zone often produces when the fish get up this way.

It was a dynamic day of change today.  The albacore often move during a full moon period and they seem to be showing up in new places the past couple of days.

Monday Morning August 11, 2003 @ 7:45 am.

The top of the 1010 Trench is a happening place to be this morning as some good albacore fishing is being reported.  The weather sounds nice again this morning.  As always, be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

Take a look at latitude and longitude coordinates 3143 and 11746 at 62 miles 194 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3144 and 11748 which is 63 miles 196 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3143 and 11743 which is 61 miles 192 degrees from Point Loma.

Sunday Evening, August 10, 2003

There is a good bite going on late in the day at the top of the 1010 Trench at latitude and longitude coordinates 3144 and 11744 which is 61 miles 193 degrees from Point Loma.

Another set of coordinates to add to those from where there was action this morning down to the outside of the 1140 Finger are at 3115 and 11716 which is 84 miles 169 degrees from Point Loma.  A private boater reported limiting out on albacore in that area.

Here is an email report from private boater Robbie Robinson of the Spontaneous:

     Bob,

It is a bit late, but wanted to pass on today's fishing.  We headed straight down to 31.19 and 117.27 which is 81 miles 175 degrees from Point Loma.  I wanted to put the lines in till day light (6 AM).  Within 5 minutes the cedar plug was hit which lead to three of us getting 9 bait fish up to 30+ pound albacore.  We put the jigs back in the water and the pink and white got hit within 10 minutes.  This stop lasted 30 minutes and another 10 bait fish all good quality.  Most of the action was around the numbers listed above.  We had a number of the one day sport boat fleet around the same area.  I did hear of guys fishing further down at 31.13 and 117.19, but there was not need to head that way.

Weather was good with a slight chop, but nothing to complain about.  I had heard about a few boats getting yellowtail and dorado on the more local banks, but the albacore fishing was just too good to pass up.  In the end we all had our limits within 90 minutes of fishing, but a good number were released.  Let someone else enjoy the fun....

     Robbie
     Spontaneous..

Sunday Late Afternoon, August 10, 2003

It has been a peculiar day of albacore fishing as the bite in areas talked about in the morning report below kind of died after the early morning and people went looking around trying to find some better numbers of fish.

I got one private boater report from one who wishes to remain anonymous who found wide open fishing in between the two hot areas from Saturday's fishing.  They were below the 295 Bank and  had 3 stops for limits of albacore. The last stop was a real wild one where the albacore bite turned into a wide open bite on 20 to 25 pound yellowtail.  Check the area of latitude and longitude coordinates 3121 and 11730 which is 79 miles 178 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3121 and 11734 which is 80 miles 180 degrees from Point Loma.  The last one was at 3119 and 11732 which is 82 miles 179 degrees from Point Loma.  They were working a temperature break where the water went from 68.5 degrees to 67.7 degrees.

A bit above that area I heard a report of some action happening at 3127 and 11735 which is 74 miles 182 degrees from Point Loma.

The other interesting areas were found by some boats fishing their way down the line from the Orange County and Los Angeles area harbors.  The best zone was around the 1010 Trench.  Check the area of 3139 and 11741 which is 64 miles 188 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3135 and 11741 which is 68 miles 188 degrees from Point Loma.  Also look at 3141 and 11744 which is 63 miles 191 degrees from Point Loma.  Other action was reported in the area of 3141 and 11740 which is 62 miles 188 degrees from Point Loma.

Also look below the Double 220 Bank at 3132 and 11738 which is 70 miles 185 degrees from Point Loma.  Other action was reported nearby at 3130 and 11739 which is 72 miles 185 degrees from Point Loma.  Also good action was reported at 3128 and 11738 which is 74 miles 184 degrees from Point Loma.

Another area that produced some action during the week and then went quiet on Saturday, produced some action again today as there were some albacore stops and some yellowtail caught on kelp paddies at the "Cross" area inside of the 60 Mile Bank.  Look a bit to the northwest of the "Cross" in the region of 3202 and 11802 which is 55 miles 215 degrees from Point Loma.

All in all it looks like the fish might be moving around a bit and today the 1010 Trench and the area at about 80 miles 180 to 182 degrees from Point Loma sounded the best today.

Sunday Morning August 10, 2003

There are very good numbers of albacore biting in the area outside the 1140 Finger this morning.  I have not heard any report one way or the other yet from the area below the 295 Bank.  The weather sounds nice again this morning.  As always be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

Some coordinates where good action is happening this morning are as follows:

Latitude and Longitude             Course and Distance From Point Loma

3120 and 11724                             80 miles 174 degrees

3113 and 11724                             87 miles 173 degrees

3112 and 11722                             87 miles 172 degrees

3111 and 11722                             88 miles 172 degrees

Coronado Islands

Tuesday August 12, 2003

There was a little bit of yellowtail action this morning for boats anchored up at Pukey Point at North Island and at the Shack in the lee of North Island.  There was a show of fish around the boats on the chum and an occasional hooked.  It was over at around 8:30.

The boats fishing sand bass in the Flats did well today.  There were fish to be caught both anchoring and drifting.  Here are some coordinates where action was being reported today.  Take a look at latitude and longitude 3225 and 11710.  Also look at 3226 and 11710.  There were also some good marks reported at 3228 and 11711 as well as at 3228 and 11712.  Look for meter marks to locate the sand bass.

There is not much change to report from Wednesday's report.  The best fishing remains for sand bass outside of the Bull Ring area.  It remains good fishing but is still the type of bite where you have to anchor up on a meter mark and chum chunked bait to get the fish to build up and start to bite well.

Take a look for meter marks in an area beginning at around the 3230 latitude on down to the 3225 latitude while traveling along the approximate 11710 longitude.  Specifically, look around 3228 and 11710.

There is just not much to tell you about at the Coronados proper right now.  There are a few calico bass and barracuda biting at spots like the Middle Grounds, Ribbon Kelp, 5 Minute Kelp and South Kelp Ridge, but it's a pretty scratchy bite right now.

Wednesday, August 6, 2003

Other than a good sand bass bite in the Flats outside of the Bull Ring, there is very little to report out at the Coronados proper.

The morning sand bass bite is good and most of the 3/4 day trips are limiting out.  Take a look for meter marks from the area of latitude and longitude coordinates 3228 and 11711 on down to 3225 and 11711.  Generally speaking, you are looking in about 80 feet of water.  It has not been the wide open spawning type of bite of a few weeks ago but rather the type of bite where you anchor on a meter mark and start chumming chunks to get the fish to build up under the boat so you can pick away at them.

I go a report from private boater Phil Oren of the Nancy II who caught a big white seabass on Tuesday while fishing in a touch closer to the coast and closer to the border.  Phil said he was fishing latitude and longitude coordinates  3229.90 and 11709.73 at 9:00 in the morning when he hooked the fish.  It weighed 48 pounds and was 55 inches long and had a 24 3/4 inches girth.

Phil took the head of the fish to the research facility in Carlsbad and they told him it was about 25 years old.  He said he will be releasing any other big white seabass that he brings to the boat.

Private boaters Bob Woodard Jr. and Sr. fished together on Tuesday on Bob Jr's boat Dropback and Bob Sr. reported getting into a good bite on barracuda and calico bass while drifting outside the anchorage in the lee of South Island.  Try the Ribbon Kelp in the lee of South Island, the Middle Grounds and the Rockpile for a shot a some barracuda and calico bass, but overall the fishing has been just fair with the exception of the sand bass bite outside the Bull Ring.

Coastal, Catalina and other Island Reports

Friday, August 8, 2003

The sand bass bite off Imperial Beach has slowed for the time being.  In general, some cool water has moved into that area as well as the kelp at Point Loma and La Jolla and slowed the fishing.  The water conditions improved some at La Jolla today and the improved conditions brought some better calico bass fishing.   Maybe it is going to turn around and improve soon.

With the sand bass bite slowed at Imperial Beach the half day boats have been fishing for rockfish and bass on the morning trips at some of the hard bottom areas outside and below  the Whistler Buoy.  During the afternoon hours there have been some calico bass biting at the Point Loma Kelp beds and they have been picking up some pretty good numbers of calicos in the kelp.  Try kelp bed spots like the Dropoff above the Point Loma Lighthouse and the Green Tank.  A key is to look for places whit a good downhill current flow.  Flyline anchovies into the kelp for the calico bass.

The La Jolla area picked up some today for the calico bass.  Similar to the fishing at Point Loma kelp the fishing is best during the afternoon hours with the better current flow.  Try the kelp at the upper end at spots like the Half.

Captain Joe Cacciola of the Sea Star out of Helgren's Sportfishing reports excellent sand bass fishing and some good numbers of barracuda biting.  Joe said the sand bass bite was scratchy this morning, but as has been the pattern lately they started to bite better and better as the day went on.  Joe had limits of sand bass and 20 barracuda today.  He said they had a 35 pound white seabass on the Oceanside-95 today and says they have been hooking an occasional yellowtail or white seabass incidental to fishing the sand bass and barracuda.

They had mixed anchovies and sardines for bait today.  Anchovies, small to medium size sardines and plastics have been best for the sand bass. Try the sardines and surface iron for the barracuda.  He reports that a wide variety of plastics have working for  the sand bass and he cited the Cotees as working very well.  Also try iron for the barries.  Try the Tady 45's and Iron Man SS Lightweights in blue and white or sardine colors.

Joe reported that they were fishing in about 90 to 110 feet of water on the Clam Beds from the Barn to Box Canyon.

Joe says he still has some open charter dates available in August.  If you want further information on chartering the Sea Star you can call Captain Joe Cacciola direct at Sea Star Charters at (760) 966-0111.  Joe runs a first class operation and gets my highest recommendation.

Here is an email report from private boater Jake Jucenas while fishing on the Semper Fish.

Sorry I didn't get this out to you sooner, but I was fishing some rocks
northwest of Oceanside Harbor in my 21-foot Triumph the "SEMPER FISH" last
Sunday for a fair bite on Sand and Calico bass.

I kept getting bit and broken off on the rocks as the current drifted my sardine across it.  I tried once with a tighter line, got bit and on setting the hook immediately gave out about 150 yards of line. A tug-o-war ensued for maybe 15 minutes.   The end result was about a 35-pound white seabass on 15-lb line on a Shimano 400 on a Flippin' Stick.

Got pictures coming but will be awhile before I use up the roll of film. I will, however, invest in a digital camera.

Awesome fish, awesome fight. --Jake Jucenas

I got the following email report from Russ Slaughter about the squid at Catalina and about some white seabass biting at Catalina:

     Bob,

The squid boat you mention in your Wednesday report is the "Sue Boy" and his name is Rick.  I spoke to him on the cell phone this afternoon and he got squid last night from a seiner at the Vs and was selling it today in front of Avalon.  He also received a confirmed report of 2 WSB taken at Binnacle Rock today by a local skiff guy out of Avalon.  Didn't sound like there was much squid to go around for the commercial fleet but limited quantities for jigging.

FYI...Rick is extremely generous and fair.  Right now he is the only squid guy out there but when it gets crowded in the spring he basically provides twice the squid for the same price as the other guys. Rick is a close personal friend of over 20 years and really isn't in this game for the money. He enjoys being out there, making a meager living and likes seeing people catch fish with squid he provides.  Truly one a kind person.  Anyway hope this info helps your viewers.

Marlin

Wednesday August 13, 2003

I did not hear much marlin news today as it did not sound as if many boats were out looking.  The best thing I heard was a boat fishing inside the Dome at San Clemente Island that reported having 4 quick zips on the jigs.

I heard a boat that fished their way down from Catalina to the 425 Bank traveling to Marina Coral and they had no action along the way.  There was a report that there was a group of feeders seen at the 267 Spot outside Dana Point on Tuesday.  A boat fishing around the east end of Catalina had no action to report as of around noon.

Tuesday August 12, 2003

There was not much to report today as I heard of very few boat out looking for marlin today.  The weather was sloppy today.  As always be sure to check the latest marine weather forecast before you go.

The only boat I heard marlin fishing today worked the area from Pyramid Head over to the Dome at San Clemente Island for no action.  They then went over to the east end of Catalina to check out a report that someone had seen a few marlin at the Slide this morning.  That is the second day in a row of slow fishing reported along the lee of San Clemente Island which was the weekend hotspot.

I did no not know of anyone out fishing the banks local to San Diego today.

Monday August 11, 2003

Today there was a marlin brought into San Diego by Jim Wachtler of the Wild Thing.  Jim was fishing near the 289 spot inside San Clemente Island when the fish hit a jig.  They had one other lost jig strike hookup in that same zone.

The lee of San Clemente Island was pretty quiet today after being a hot spot on the weekend.  There were three boats in the area between Pyramid Head and the Dome and the only fish I know of see was a single fish seen by a spotter plane looking for swordfish.

There was a marlin caught from a blind jig strike at the 152 off the east end of Catalina and there was a jumper and a tailer seen 2 miles outside of Dana Point.  There was a show of swordfish reported 3 miles outside of the 14 Mile Bank.

I heard just one boats fishing the 302 Bank area which produced some marlin action on the weekend and the report as of the early afternoon was that is was looking pretty dead.

Here is an email report from George Garrett of the Joker about marlin fishing in the lee of San Clemente Island on Sunday:

     Sunday's report.....Steve tagged a fish at 8:30 AM on 20# dac from a
small group of feeders at 5 miles north of Pyramid  Head.  Megan, Jack's 12
year old daughter, caught her first marlin in the afternoon from a drop back
on 20# dac.  The fish went nuts during the first ten minutes as it got tail wrapped, went down and died.  She did a great job planing it up for over an hour.  We used the albacore gaff to help us pull it on the swim step as it came in backwards and was dead.

The fishing was much slower today (Sunday) according to the boats that fished this general area on Saturday.  I know of four other fish that were taken in
addition to ours for the approximate fifteen boats working the area.  DONNA
C got a tailor to go late in the day, PESCADOR had a jig fish around 8 AM,
and TIGHT LINES had two.

Thanks again to Hoose for the Saturday evening call with the dope.

     Out, George

Monday Morning August 11, 2003

Sunday saw a boat catch 2 marlin at San Clemente Island.  They were working tailers that popped up in the late afternoon outside the Radar Dome at San Clemente Island.

There was a hookup reported at the 302 Spot and I did not hear if they ever got the fish.

One of the marlin caught late Saturday afternoon was on the Sea Trek IV and Lil Miller at the Marlin Club reported that is was caught 4 miles north of the 138 Spot.  That would have you in the area of latitude and longitude coordinates 3251 and 11748 which is 32 miles 279 degrees from Point Loma.

Sunday Morning August 10, 2003

I was able to pinpoint the area where all the marlin were caught at San Clemente Island on Saturday (see the report below).  There were tailers showing well in the afternoon about 3 miles off the Island between Fishook and the Domes.

Saturday August 9, 2003

I am still trying to gather some more details on today's marlin fishing but there is some good news to report.  There was a real good show and bite today for boats fishing about 5 miles off San Clemente Island. The problem is that I believe them to be 5 miles northeast of Pyramid Head at San Clemente Island but have not been able to confirm that as of yet for sure.

The Wild Bill had a 4 marlin day in this area another boat reportedly had 2 and another had 1.  It sounded as if they were baiting quite a few fish within this zone during the day.

The Slide at Catalina was also reported to have produced a few marlin today.  There were quite a few boats working this area but some fish were being hooked and caught.

In the San Diego area, Bob Woodard of the Cristina Lynn reported fishing with Harry Okuda on Harry's boat Alfresco III  and seeing a marlin and getting a jig strike while fishing about 3 miles southeast of the 302 Spot.   Bob said that Ken Yasuda of the Encounter caught a marlin in the region of the 302 Spot and said that the Anita J caught and released 2 marlin fishing down to the southeast of the 302 Spot.

Chuck Smith's Sea Trek IV is coming into the Marlin Club with a marlin.  I will update when I get more details on this and any other of these catches.

Thursday, August 7, 2003--Supplement

I got the scoop on the marlin caught and released out at the 302 Spot today from Skip on the Cast and Blast who reported getting the fish about 1 mile north  of the highspot at the 302.  He said it was a blind strike on a dorado color 18 inch Zuker that he dragged through a spot of working birds.  Skip estimated the fish to have weighed between 150 and 175 pounds.  Skip also reported the Bob Woodard Jr. of the Dropback caught a dorado on an marlin jig trolled right near the highspot at the 302.

Wednesday August 6, 2003

There were two marlin caught that I know of today....not bad for a weekday with just a few boats out fishing.

The Ken Dan tagged and released a jig fish at the 302 Spot.  Harry Okuda was the angler.  A banner day aboard the Ken Dan as they caught their limits of albacore down at the 295 Bank early this morning (see today's albacore report above.)

The other marlin caught was taken up more toward Catalina between the 209 Spot and the 267 Spot.  It was caught on a black and purple jig and was taken into Avalon.
